Every day, new manufacturers pop up with a new and improved cover for the Kindle 3. Covers and cases are becoming cheaper and cheaper, but as the price goes down, it appears, so does the quality. The Kindle lighted cover has been around for a while and in addition to being one of the most expensive covers available for the Kindle, it is also Amazon's best-seller. So, it looks like people are happy to pay a bit more if they know they are getting quality. We have reviewed both Kindle covers and Kindle covers in leather in the past, and the Kindle lighted cover made it onto one of those lists. However, we thought it might be valuable for you guys to know a bit more detail about the Kindle lighted cover to see if it is worth the $59.99 Amazon is asking for it.
When reviewing the Kindle lighted cover we can't really compare it to other leather covers costing $15-$25. It would be like comparing a brand spanking new BMW to a brand new Daihatsu. Everybody knows that the BMW is a better car, the question is; are you ready to pay the price attached to it? The Kindle lighted cover may not have the highest score in the "value for money" category, however it is pretty much unbeatable for build quality, looks and and ease of use.
We decided to take a look at each of the features of the Kindle lighted cover and see if they are worth the $59.99 price tag.
1. Leather Casing - It is made up of good quality leather on the outside and it feels smooth and durable. It also looks quite stylish and professional. On the inside it has a gray microfiber suede, that it supposed to protect your Kindle from damage. Is it worth the $59.99 price tag? In our opinion, no. If all this cover had to offer was the leather case, we would go for something else, like the Marware Eco-Vue Leather Folio, but there is more to the Kindle lighted cover than just the leather.
2. Light - The most outstanding feature of the light is that it draws power straight from the battery of the Kindle, which means you don't have to carry a packet of batteries around with you. This means the battery on your Kindle will drain a bit quicker, but in our testing this only means roughly one week less of reading time (2 weeks vs 3 weeks) if you use the light. The built-in, retractable LED light pulls out from the back cover when needed, and slides away to become invisible when not in use. It is nice and bright and makes the Kindle easy to read in all light settings, even in the dark. The LED light works like it is adding brightness to your screen, without adding glare. Worth the price tag, absolutely!
3. Looks - At first glance, the Kindle lighted cover looks like any other cover, but once you take a closer look you realize that it is true quality build. Many cases and covers we have tested may look really nice when they first arrive, but after only a few months of use, they start showing signs of wear and tear. The Kindle lighted cover is very durable and feels sturdy. It has a professional look and would work well for everything from a business man or woman to a student. The looks of the Kindle lighted leather are very versatile and considering its quality build, is worth the price tag.
4. Ease of use - When the Kindle lighted cover is fitted to your eReader, access to the Kindle buttons and switches is easy. The rounded edges of the Kindle lighted cover makes it fit well in your hand, and because it can be folded back, reading with only one hand is effortless. Being a very compact cover, it is easy to bring with when you are on the go, but still protects your Kindle should you be unlucky enough to drop it. We believe its ease of use is worth the $59.99.
The goal of this review was to assess whether or not the Kindle lighted cover is worth its somewhat expensive $59.99 price tag. To sum up, we here at Comparison eReaders believe it is. There might not be anything special about the leather itself, but the light it carries, its looks and ease-of-use makes it earn its price tag and we would recommend it to anyone looking for a high quality lighted cover which has a timeless look and will last them a lifetime.
