How To Format Your EBooks For Amazon's Kindle

If you're not using Amazon Kindle already to establish yourself as a trusted author, you really should be. It's a great way to build authority and brand yourself as an expert. The only downside of Kindle is that it's a little bit tough to get the formatting just right.

Now I've written a number of articles about the power of Kindle and the its benefits - remember there are authors who've literally sold millions of Kindle books, one who hit the headlines a few months back - over a million copies in 1 year at only 99cents. Not much I hear you say, but that guy netted over $330,000 and just think about the viral exposure he got -what do you think will happen the next time he publishes a book on Kindle? It's not rocket science, so get involved...

The easiest way to do it is to upload the document directly to Kindle Direct Publishing. The site is kdp.amazon.com. Once this is done correctly, your book can be viewed on Kindle devices and any device with a Kindle app. This includes PC's, Macs, Androids, Blackberry phones, iPhones, and iPads.

Formats Kindle Accepts

Kindle will accept several different formats:

- Microsoft Word (.doc or.docx)

- ePub (.epub)

- Plain text (.txt)

- HTML (.htm,.html or.zip)

- Adobe PDF (.pdf)

- Rich Text Format (.rft)

- MobiPocket (.mobi or.prc)

While lots of folks naturally choose to upload Microsoft Word documents directly to Kindle, I'd advise against this. The reason is that there's extra coding in Word documents that the Kindle reader can't handle. What this code will do is mess up your formatting completely. Your graphics will be screwed up and your fonts misaligned.

I recommend using Rich Text (.rft) or plain text (.txt) because neither have any extra code that can make things difficult for the Kindle reader.

Images In Your Books

Pictures have to be in .jpg format. They should be aligned in the center only. Don't copy and paste them into your document; they should be inserted directly. Currently, the Kindle device itself only shows images in grayscale, but devices with Kindle apps can show full color.

Other Formatting Considerations

- No headers or footers

- No bullet points

- No strange characters that the device might not be able to read

- Bold, italics and indentations are alright

- Add a page break at the end of each chapter or they'll all run together

- Use 'indent' under Paragraph Settings instead of tab key if you want to indent

I suggest making the table of contents at the very end of your Kindle formatting. The reason is that the page numbers will be different than those of your original document. It looks pretty weird to have an incorrect table of contents, so do this as a last step and make sure it's right.

Before you upload, you should also scroll through the book slowly one last time looking for anything funny. Be on the lookout in particular for funny page breaks or tabs that you forgot to take out.

Using MobiPocket Creator

Another option that makes formatting a heck of a lot easier is to use MobiPocket Creator. This is a free program you can get from MobiPocket.com that converts HTML files into .prc, which is an eBook format. It turns your HTML file directly into Kindle-ready eBooks, which means one more step (converting.doc file to HTML, then HTML to .prc) but eliminates a lot of the formatting hassles.

Once you publish your first Kindle eBook, you'll get a feel for which files work best for you. Just don't get frustrated if you have to do a little re-formatting. It becomes second nature after a while. And if you're going to be publishing a lot (which you should be!), it's well worth it to download MobiPocket Creator because it makes it much easier.

Amazon's Kindle 2 - Is it an Interesting Gadget?

Every tech savvy would have heard the news about Amazon's Kindle 2.0 release recently. Let's look into what the buzz is about.

Let's first talk about what is this gadget, in favor of non techies who are the beginners for this niche.

"Amazon Kindle is an e-book reader, an embedded system for reading electronic books (e-books), launched in the United States by prominent online bookseller Amazon.com in November 2007. The Kindle was developed by Amazon's Lab126.It uses an electronic paper display and downloads content over Amazon Whisper net using the Sprint EVDO network. The Kindle can be used without a computer, and Whisper net is accessible without any fee."

The newer version of Kindle 2 is an e-book reader has many improvements over its predecessor.

It weighs only 10.2 ounces and fits perfectly in your hands. The ergonomics have been improved with change in page-turn button positioning and a new 5-way controller has been added. This device boasts a 25% longer battery life.

Kindle is completely wireless and ready to use right out of the box and you can charge it with either wall charger or USB cable. It uses Amazon's Whisper net technology plus Sprint's national high-speed (3G) data network to wirelessly search, discover, and download content on the go and you don't have to pay any wireless bills.

Kindle 2 has enhanced library and holds over 1,500 Books, and best of all, a copy of every book you purchased is backed up online at Amazon.com for you to download anytime again if you want to. It also features black-and-white 6 inch screen with sharp and natural glare-free display. Has the new Text-to-Speech feature with both male and female voices in case you get lazy to read.

Other improvements include 20% faster page turns, annotations to text bookmark your last place in the book, full image zoom, personal documents storage, The New Oxford American Dictionary look up, wireless access to Wikipedia, web search, along with some experimental features like a basic web browser and MP3 and pod cast player.

Actually this kindle 2 sells for $400+ in Amazon. Some people who have confirmed shipping resell their Kindle 2s for profit in hopes that Amazon will not be able to satisfy the demand during the launch (as there are much greater expectations on this device).Something like that actually happened with Sony PRS-505 was released. Supply was much lower than demand and for months after the official launch it sold on eBay for double its retail price and the same the kindle2 is also planned.

Now lets look into some complains on this device:

The screen is too small and it will sell out due to hype with limited production. No touch screen, no wi-fi, they eliminated the SD card slot. Overall a laptop PC is cheaper and many times more versatile.

But the fact is that excluding the price of this deal, it's actually a great device, you can browse first chapters of tons of books free, get them delivered wirelessly in seconds, and the new kindles seems to have fixed the navigation and style flaws of the old one and has sped up refresh rate. But the device itself is a nice next step. They can't make it color until eInk perfects the color screen and it's affordable enough to mass produce. Saying things like just buy a laptop complete misses the point of its small size and simplicity, it's supposed to replace a book and disappear in your hand like a book does, not an easy task.

Some people don't want to carry around a bunch of books. They don't want the clutter of having a stack of books in their house. This device can store plenty of books and you can access them all at the touch of a button. No need to travel to the bookstore. The battery life on this is touted at days with wireless on and weeks with it turned off.

Now that we have discussed about the pros and cons on this topic, you can decide for yourself whether it is an interesting device or not.

The Anatomy of Amazon's Kindle Reader

The newest baby of Amazon, Kindle Reader, is lighting up the minds of millions of people all over the world-or, at least, for those who have got hold of their newest innovation immediately.

Kindle is basically like your own library, only that you can bring it with you anywhere you go. You can even tuck it in your bag. It boasts of over 90,000r reading materials, such as books, magazines, and blogs. Any update from the latter two will be delivered right at your own reader. But what else do you need to know about Kindle?

1. It uses ink. This is practically no joke. Kindle is traditional in the sense that it tries to capture the readability and scan ability of physical newspapers. What sets the difference, though, is that the ink is converted to something electronic. Besides giving you the feeling that you're actually reading a real paper, it also allows you to read it even under natural sunlight. There's no need for you to suffer under the glare o computer screens.

2. It connects you. Kindle uses a new technology called Whispernet. It gives you access to the Internet without the hassle of cable wires. You don't even have to look for any WiFi hotspot. This also allows you to surf through the Web and read any interesting material from Wikipedia. Also, you can order your books immediately. They will also be delivered to you instantly. You should learn to take advantage of this as there's no extra cost attach to it.

3. It's ergonomic. The design of Kindle has received a number of harsh criticisms, but for the book lover, it spells bliss. Because a reader has a tendency to change position while reading, Kindle has been designed vertical for long form reading. Also, navigation buttons, which are located at each side, means that both the right-handed and left-handed can skim through the pages of the book with relative ease and comfort.

4. It has a QWERTY keyboard. Because anybody who has his own PC or at least used a computer knows the QWERTY keyboard really well, there's not much training you need to do when it comes to searching for and buying your favorite book, newspaper, or magazine from the Internet.

5. It lasts longer. It has one of the most long-lasting batteries, even longer than those found in cell phones and laptops. If you're going to make use of your wireless connection, you may have to recharge your reader at least every other day. Otherwise, you can have one full week of uninterrupted reading. You also don't have to wait that long too before the battery gets fully charged. Within two hours, you can go back to your routine, which is reading.

6. It has useful accessories. There's no such thing as trivial accessory if you speak about Kindle. You can utilize the USB cable when you're going to transfer files from your Kindle to your PC and vice versa. The book cover, meanwhile, offers protection to your ebook reader, making sure that it doesn't get any scratch or dirty.

Overview - Amazon's Kindle - eBook Reader

When the Kindle wasn't yet in the picture, many companies had tried its hand at developing an eBook reader that people would actually use. At this time, downloading text documents onto a PDA device - Palm, Blackberry and the like, was the way to read eBooks whenever a desktop is not available. Then in November of 2007, the Amazon's Kindle was introduced and started to bring a better experience on eBook reading.

The advancements in technology, such as broadband and LCD contrast, in particular, have really accelerated the adoption of eBook readers. Adding to the allure of eBooks is the fact that there are so many titles available (200,000+). You're sure to find thousands of hours of enjoyment.

Manufacturers of Sony's Portable Reader, iRex Digital Reader, Jinke Electronics and Netronix are getting competitive to keep up with the success of the Amazon Kindle. And today, the resurgence of eBook readers is at an all-time high.

Reading an eBook on a PDA is nothing more like reading a Word Document, formatted into a book-like content structure. It actually just allowed one to look at text documents in the guise of "eBooks". This limited the commercial use of the content to basically manuals and corporate documents.

Oprah was quoted as saying that Amazon Kindle was "life-changing for me" and "the wave of the future." Why?

Amazon took a major leap forward by creating a product that physically looks like a book. This is what makes the Amazon Kindle so special. But, even more importantly, the text looks much like a text printed on a physical book. Reading eBooks on the Kindle is very "easy on the eyes" visually, since it uses the technology called E-Ink. The Amazon Kindle also has a high contrast screen, which does a great job of simulating a printed page. It is designed to be read under lighted conditions and can even be read under bright sunlight, just like a printed book.

The astounding size of the library is one of the biggest selling points of the Amazon Kindle. At last count, Amazon has over 190,000 books, which includes New York Times Best Sellers. The top U.S. and international newspapers are available for download, as well, including: NY Times, Wall Street Journal, Frankfurter, Irish Times, etc. And finally, over 1,000 major blog sites are accessible, including Slashdot, TechCruch, ESPN and more.

Another major leap for Amazon is how eBooks are distributed. Originally, Amazon had planned to distribute eBooks over Wi-Fi, but that would require customers to find a WiFi hot spot. Eventually, Amazon chose Sprint's high speed EVDO network. Using the technology called WhisperNet, customers can download eBooks anywhere that there's a cell phone connection. If the high speed EVDO network is not available, the Amazon Kindle switches back to the slower 1x speed.

Those mentioned here were just some of many reasons why Oprah Winfrey officially endorsed the Amazon Kindle in October of this year. She even declared it as her favorite new gadget.

Amazon's Big Secret About The Kindle Fire Tablet

Amazon has a secret about their newest Tablet PC: the Kindle Fire.

It has to do with the cost. No, it is not the price, it is pretty well know that this new tablet retails for $199.

The secret has to do with how much Amazon makes from the sale of each and every Amazon Fire Tablet. Amazon is raking in a huge nothing profit. Yup, you read that right. Amazon makes no money from each Kindle Tablet sale. In fact it costs them 10$ more to produce these tablets than they sell them for. So they actually lose 10 dollars each and every tablet.

Now losing 10$ a tablet may not seem much to you and me. (Although every little bit counts in these tough economic times). But when you figure that Amazon could possibly sell 10-20 million of these units, you begin to see that this could be a loss in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

But why would Amazon be content to do this with the Kindle Fire tablet?

Why would Amazon be willing to provide products for only a loss? It is simple, Amazon.com views this modern tablet a "Loss Leader". (This is a merchandise that is sold an inexpensive price, or even sells for less than it costs to make, to promote sales and profits of various other products and services).

Many of the folks who shop for Amazon Tablet PC's will want to purchase additional add-ons. They may want to get the Kindle Fire "skins", Kindle Fire stands and power converters or even the warranty.

Amazon likely make-up any sales deficits from the purchase of these add-ons. They may even turn a small profit per sale on average ...but that is not the primary point.

The real reason behind Amazon's insane decision about the Kindle Fire pricing has to do with consumption of Electronic Media. Amazon has hand crafted the Kindle Fire Tablet to give the customer the very best in media consumption. Amazon wants to give consumers good reason to buy MP3's, streaming movies, digital books and all other forms of virtual products from them.

The future of this media consumption is important to Amazon because they are betting that devices like the tablet will be essential to this media consumption.

The neat thing about this is that Amazon normally has the most affordable prices anyway as well as providing the "gold standard" of services for this content material also.

In many ways, the Kindle Fire Tablet PC and Amazon. com are creating something you can use forever. Not really only a Kindle Fire Tablet life span but your life-time. So why not consider a little bit more specifics of this innovative state of the art Amazon tablet.

Why not check a Kindle Fire out as a present for a loved one, relative...or maybe for yourself.

Amazon's Kindle Reader And Kindle Books Make A Great Tag Team

In many ways, the Kindle e-book reader is the ideal product for Amazon. It's a great fit for the Amazon business model and benefits greatly from Amazon's well established association with books and reading.

The company's link to books, along with its brand recognition and the trust which that engenders gives consumers confidence that Amazon will not only support its e-book reader hardware in the long term, but that it will also make sure that there is a wide choice of reasonably priced e-books for use with the reader hardware.

In fact, the combination of reader hardware and e-books has been a key factor in the success of the Kindle to date. The huge selection of Kindle books gives customers the confidence to buy Amazon's reader. Similarly, Kindle hardware sales result in additional sales of Kindle books.

Whilst that is intuitively true, if you want some positive proof, you only have to look at the sales spike which Kindle books see every January. The explanation for that is the fact that so many people wake up on Christmas morning to find a Kindle reader under the family tree.

Over the next few days and weeks, Kindle recipients will visit Amazon and download a few Kindle books for use with their newly acquired reader. Hence the annual sales spike in Kindle e-book sales every January.

The fact is that Kindle e-books and Kindle readers enjoy a very profitable symbiotic relationship. The huge selection of books gives customers the confidence to buy the reader hardware. Every new Kindle reader sale generates further sales of Kindle books. It's a virtuous circle which results in an upwards sales spiral for Amazon.

The recent introduction of the Kindle Fire tablet computer could result in Amazon finding itself in a similar position with downloadable movies. Don't forget, Amazon owns Netflix and, in the shape of the Kindle Fire, has once again paired hardware and software in much the same way that it matched up the Kindle reader and Kindle books.

That's what separates Amazon from many of its competitors right now - and it is one of the key factors in the almost total dominance of the Kindle reader. Amazon is providing both elements in the reading experience - it can provide access to both the medium and the message. If it can repeat the same trick with the Kindle Fire and movies (or software, or TV shows, or whatever grabs the public imagination), it could, quite conceivably, go on to dominate the tablet computer market just as it currently dominates the e-book reader market.

What Are the Differences Between Amazon's Kindle 1 & Kindle 2?

With the release of the much anticipated Amazon Kindle 2 which is meant to be better and sleeker than the original, you may be asking yourself whether you should buy the upgraded version or stick with the popular Kindle 1. If that's the case then read on, this article will take you through the differences between the two versions of this popular eBook reader.

First just looking at the two machines you'll see a lot of differences. The Kindle 2 is a lot slimmer than its predecessor at only 9mm thick and while it weighs the same as before it's now easier to hold and carry around.

The screen size is also the same at 600 x 800 but the new model has better graphical capabilities so that you'll now get 16 shades of grey rather than the four of the first Kindle.

This makes the text on the screen easier to read and quite sharp (less bleed into the screen). Of course the original version still had good readability and at first glance you might not notice much of a difference, but after reading many pages you'll appreciate the subtle crisper text. The background has also changed from a slight paper textured look in the first to a smooth flat surface in the second.

While the Kindle 2 is meant to be faster at page turning and overall speed, we can't say we noticed any significant difference between the two, after all it was never like Amazon's original model was slow - it wasn't.

The differences that were significant and enough to warrant considering an upgrade was the design changes in the newer model. The power switch is now conveniently at the top of the Kindle rather than the back which makes it much easier to turn it on and off. The volume buttons have also been moved to a rocker switch now on the right hand side of the reader (rather than the bottom).

The navigation system is now much more intuitive with the 'next' button sitting conveniently where your thumb rests so you can easily turn the page and it feels more natural.

Overall the differences between Amazon's Kindle 1 and 2 are subtle but do improve your ebook reading experience. So it's up to you whether you want the latest and greatest or don't mind the older version for up to $100 cheaper.

New Kindle 3 Amazon's Revamped Ebook Reader

With the increased popularity of ebook reading devices Amazon have introduced the new kindle 3 model. It is a smaller revised version of the original best selling Amazon Kindle.

They have decreased the size and weight, it is said to be lighter than a paperback book weighing in at 8.7 ounces. The response times of the reader have also been improved together with the new size of display which is now 6 inches (diagonal) it uses the new e-ink pearl format that gives a greater reading experience in daylight than most of this devices' competitors.

This new screen display technology gives you brighter, sharper text and better picture quality compared to the usual LCD screen displays. The reduction in glare especially is it's major benefit you can read normally even in direct sunlight.

The wireless 3g application enables you to browse for the latest book titles available online, no connection to a computer necessary the new kindle 3 does that directly itself so you can search for a new book even if you are away from home.

With the large selection of ebooks available online these days (free or paid for) they have also increased the storage space on the e-reader enabling you to store up to 3,500 ebooks at one time.

The price of ebooks are very reasonable also compared to real paperback and hard backed versions titles mostly around the $9.00 mark.

Other New Kindle 3 improvements are:

Longer battery life - up to ten days without having to re-charge the device.
Better placement of buttons - The keypad has improved tactile buttons.
3G wireless option.
Built in wi-fi capabilities.
Audio book function. There is another function to convert the text to speech (audio) which isn't all that special but for those who like to use this application it can come in handy. As mentioned above you can store audio books to listen to also.

One other minor hiccup is with the placement of the control buttons on the side of the e-book reader. There can be a tendency to press these by mistake when picking up the kindle, but once you become used to handling the device this quickly becomes insignificant.

Other applications like Twitter and Facebook can be used on the new kindle 3 you can share anything you find interesting with your friends.

This ebook reading device can be used right away no software to upload no set-up necessary you can build up your library of e-books instantly.

Kindle DX - Amazon's New 9.7" Wireless Reading Device

Amazon has recently released yet another digital book reader, the Kindle DX. This new model aims to address a common limitation on other e-book readers, whether it is the Kindle 1, Kindle 2 or the Sony PRS series. Prior to the release of this new model, the largest screen on any e-book readers in the market measure at 6-inches. Although this is a sizable dimension (good for reading books), it take a little getting used to reading magazines and newspapers on a tiny 6-inch screen.

Among other features, the new Kindle DX comes with a huge 9.7-inch making it the largest screen on any e-book readers in the market. It incorporates most of the features on the Kindle 2 and a few additional features. The features retained in this new model includes the slim design (at just 0.38"thick and about 19 ounces in weight), 3G connectivity, Whispernet, and an instant-lookup dictionary.

There are also several new features on the new Kindle DX. It has an auto-rotation features, like iPhones. You can choose to read in portrait or landscape mode by just turning the reader to the side. It also has a larger 4GB memory (the Kindle 2 has only 2GB) for you to store your e-books and mp3 files. With a larger screen I would expect that the battery lifespan of the new model will be shorter than the Kindle 2. According to Amazon, the Kindle DX too can last up to 2 weeks on a single charge. There are also some experimental features such as a basic web browser and the read-to-me function.

To make space for the large screen, the size of the keyboard on the DX has been reduced. The keys consist of small rectangular tablets much like those on cell phones. Unlike Kindle 2, the page turn buttons on the new model is only found on the right side of the reader. This gives the user a better grip over the larger Kindle DX. The additional features on the new reader does come at a price. At the time of writing, the new reader costs $489 each.

Amazon's 3 New Kindle Touch Covers

Not to mention the number of third party providers of Kindle Touch covers, Amazon makes their own cases for the Kindle Touch. For the new Kindle Touch release Amazon has also added a new sleeve cover to their list of covers. Along with the three styles of cases, each version comes in a number of colors. The three styles of covers Amazon is offering are a standard leather Kindle Touch cover, a lighted leather cover and a sleeve cover. Below is a brief review of the three covers.

The leather Kindle Touch case by Amazon is made of real leather. The newest addition to the leather case is the formfitting harness system. Instead of using straps around the corners, the cover itself is designed to fit perfectly around the device. In all there are four colors available- black, brown, green and purple. Amazon has also designed the cover to be both thin and lightweight.

The second case style is the Amazon Lighted Touch Cover. It offers the same look of the leather cover with additional functionality. The lighted cover for the Kindle 3 was by far one of the most popular and reviewed covers for that version. Based on the new design this lighted cover is sure to be even better. The placement of the LED reading light makes the case more compact and lightweight than the past version. The light add less than one half ounce to the cover's weight.

The case's reading light is position directly above the Kindle and folds out when in use. To keep the cover lightweight, it is powered by the Touch's battery. This is what also allows the cover to remain slim and formfitting. The lighted leather Kindle Touch cover is available in all the same colors as the leather version. The four colors again are black, brown, green and purple.

The last Touch case, which is new to Amazon's offerings is the Amazon Zip Sleeve. This Touch case is the lightest Kindle Touch case Amazon offers and also the lightest available for the Touch. It is about half the weight of the lighted Touch case. Sleeves are fairly simple and made for protecting your device while it is not in use. It unzips making it easy to slide your Touch in and out of the cover. The Amazon Zip Sleeve has different colors than the other cases. The colors available are red, blue, charcoal, graphite and green.

The Touch is a great addition to Amazon's eReaders. For more Touch cover reviews and more information about Amazon's Touch covers, read this list of 7 Kindle Touch Covers. You can also check out this list of Touch Cover List.

Kindle 2 - Amazon's New E-Book Reader!

With electrical gadgets getting smaller and smaller these days, many would agree that we are soon approaching the day where paper documentation is a thing from the past. With the launch of the Amazon Kindle in 2007, many have predicted that it marks the beginning to the end of paperbacks and magazines. The Amazon Kindle was small, light and chick; all ready to lead the revolution towards a paperless society.

Just when we think that things could not get any better, Amazon launches the Kindle 2. Amazon has outdone itself once again by producing the faster, sleeker and more powerful Kindle 2. Whether it is in its looks, practicality, or function, the Kindle 2 seems to be heads and shoulders above all its competitors (namely the Sony PRS series). Here are some of the new features found in Amazon's Kindle 2.

First of all, the new e-book reader is noticeably thinner than its predecessors (and competitors) at only 1/3 of an inch thick. This makes it thinner than most magazines. It is also slightly lighter at 10.2 ounces. One of the greatest improvements in this new model is its spacious internal storage, as compared to 256MB on the old model.

The Kindle 2 also has prolonged battery life where with the wireless function off, can last up to two weeks on a single charge. The spacious 6" display screen is designed to mimic real paper. Even under bright sunlight, the display screen retains is great readability without any glare. The e-book reader can also be used to view a variety of document formats and play mp3 music.

One of biggest selling point of this new model is its new look. It just has a higher 'cool factor' to it with its more streamlined design with rounded edges and corners. Compared to the older model, the buttons on the Kindle 2 are carefully fitted into the casing to avoid any protrusions, giving it a super sleek look. With a competitive price tag and tones of new and improved features, if you are looking to get a new e-book reader the Amazon Kindle 2 is the way to go.

Amazon's Kindle Fire - Comparable to the Apple iPad2 at Less Than Half the Cost

If you thought the Kindle Fire was going to be just another e-reader, it's time to take a closer look. Price is going to be a big attraction for this portable media tablet; $199 will give buyers a product comparable to the Apple iPad2 for less than half the price, which hovers in the $500+ range.

What Can You Do on a Kindle Fire

The Fire has a color touch screen, 16 million colors to be exact and in high resolution with an extra wide viewing angle. You can watch movies and TV shows, view magazines and books, surf the internet, stream music, check your email, play games, download apps, and view Word and PDF documents.

All this, on one device that costs $199.

What's Under the Hood

Ultra fast Web Browsing and a Dual Core Processor
7" touch screen, high resolution, 16 million colors
8GB internal storage
8 hour battery time on a charge for continuous reading (wireless off)
Unlimited Amazon Cloud content storage
USB port, headphone jack, built in stereo speakers

Compared to Other Kindles

The main differences between the Fire and other Kindle models are the color screen, of course, its movie and TV show viewing capabilities, its ability to use apps, play games, and stream music. It has more on-device storage, and the only other Kindle with a multi-touch screen is the Kindle Touch e-reader.

It is easy to understand what a big success Fire is predicted to be when one considers the original Kindle release. In 2007, many were disappointed to find the first Kindle was not an iPad2 contender at all; $399 was a steep price to pay for a limited e-reader with no touch screen. The only Kindle in that price range today is 3G DX, which is still an e-reader but with a larger screen (9.7").

The apps are going to be the big difference that sets Fire apart from the other Kindles. Lack of them has been a big reason why other tablet devices have been slow to catch on. The Amazon App store provides users with literally thousands of Android games and apps, including a free app of the day.

With the holidays coming up and the Kindle Fire to be released in mid-November, it looks to be a real iPad contender for Christmas shoppers. Its likeness to the Apple tablet in addition to its much lower price tag will only sweeten the pot for Fire's success.

There are some Apple diehards that want Apple and nothing else and they are willing to pay for it. Newcomers to the tablet world can now afford to get their feet wet with a price tag just under $200.

The Fire is not 3G but Wi-Fi, which means you will be able to browse the internet and download content anywhere you have a wireless connection.

I honestly don't think anyone on your shopping list will be disappointed to find a Kindle Fire under the tree this holiday season. At that price, you might want to pick one up for yourself as well.

What Makes Amazon's Latest E-Reader Kindle DX Better Than Its Predecessors?

Amazon already dominated the market of electronic readers with its two hit products - original Kindle and Kindle 2. But still there was something missing. With other electronic readers like Sony's PRS series, Barnes and Noble Nook e-reader users wanted something more in their Amazon Kindle. Amazon took the challenge judiciously and released its new e-reader Kindle DX. Everything that was missing in the previous two releases has been taken care of. If you do a comparison between all the available e-readers then you are bound to find this version of Kindle at the top of the list.

Improvements done in Kindle DX

The best feature which it offers to its users is the large display. Kindle 2 has a display size of 6 inch, but in Kindle DX it is 9.7 inch. It will give the user a real reading experience. It also uses better e-link display technology with high resolution to make the display smoother. It uses 16 level grey scale display which gives the reader a reading experience without any strain in the eyes. Due to its larger display it is more suitable to read newspaper, magazines. Moreover previous Kindle releases did not have the ability to read PDF files, but Kindle DX has built in PDF reader which makes it more popular among its users.

There are also other improvements which this new Kindle offers. Kindle 2 has an internal memory of 2 GB which allows the user to store 1500 e-books at max, whereas the latest Kindle has increased internal storage of 4 GB. Now the user can store up to 3500 e-books.

Now after reading about all these cool features offered by Kindle DX you must be excited enough to buy one. But before you do so, just think once that do you really need all these new features added to it? Is not Kindle 2 enough according to your requirements? It is because there is a huge difference in the price. So until you need all these new features badly enough you should not go for it. But if you use your Kindle the way it should be then of course you should not wait to buy the new e-reader from Amazon.

Good Ereader is company specializing in selling Electronic readers. Visit its Kindle DX Store to know more. A lot of information is available in the E-reader blog. You will definitely enjoy being there.

Amazon's Kindle

Amazon's Kindle, introduced in 2007, is an electronic book reader. It is used to search for and download books, and display pages on its six-inch screen. It is very lightweight and is therefore portable. Holding it is like holding a thin magazine, and reading its crisp, clear, black-and-white text makes for an easy, very comfortable reading experience.

Over the years, the gadget has undergone a few modifications. The latest version, called the Kindle DX, now has a bigger 9.7-inch display, and can hold more books. It can store about 3,500 books, compared to the 1,500 that can be packed into the original Kindle. The Kindle DX also uses 3G in addition to wi-fi to download books. This means that in any place where there is cell phone coverage, one can download books on the Kindle device. Downloading is very speedy, typically taking no more than a minute for one book. What's great about the Kindle DX is a new feature called "Read to Me." This allows the user to listen to an audio reading of a book through headphones plugged into a jack on the device.

Amazon's Kindle can download not just books, but also journals, newspapers, magazines and blogs. Dailies are automatically downloaded to the device on a free two-week trial basis, and then the user can choose to continue the service for a fee, or stop it. The Amazon Kindle store carries some 630,000 book titles in various genres: bestsellers, classics, children's books, fiction and non-fiction, autobiographies, textbooks, hard-to-find books, and many more. One can search through the vast collection by book title or author. Before actually purchasing a book, one can even read a few sample pages or a review of the book. There are also recommendations based on what many users are downloading, and based on the user's previous selections.

Once books are downloaded in the Kindle, the user can read as he pleases, continuously or intermittently, without having to recharge the device often. The battery lasts for about two weeks when the wireless mode is turned off, and for about five days when this feature is on. Even with continuous reading, the Kindle does not heat up as other devices tend to, thus never distracting the reader in any way.

What the user pays for is only the books he purchases. Searching online through the Kindle bookstore incurs no subscription fees or service plans. Kindle books are also much cheaper than their physical counterparts. One makes a savings of about 60 to 70% when downloading a book compared to buying an actual copy.

Among the many features and advantages of the Kindle device, what keeps customers happiest is perhaps the crisp black-and-white display that looks very much like an actual page from a book. It simulates very well the real experience of holding a book and flicking through the pages. The display is easy on the eyes, and many users do read on the Kindle for extended periods without tiring. The ambient lighting hardly affects the clarity of the display. One can comfortably read indoors or outside under bright sunlight.

It goes without saying that the Kindle is a very portable device. Having it is like carrying a large collection of one's favorite books, all within its slight 10-ounce frame. Avid readers therefore always have their trusty Kindle device with them, especially when travelling.

Kindle Reader Review - Amazon's Wireless Reading Device

Amazon's popular wireless reading device, the Kindle reader, is the most widely available ebook reader on the market, being accessible to people in 175 countries worldwide.

If you are new to e-readers, the Kindle reader is similar in size to a regular DVD case, but thinner, and weighs 289 grams. It has a built-in wireless modem that allows for downloading ebooks, newspapers, and magazines directly to the device itself. The wireless service is free and doesn't require any monthly payments or roaming charges. Because of this, you don't have to use a computer to download your books, although you have that option if you prefer it.

The Kindle reader uses a technology called electronic paper that mimics the look of a printed book, giving it a high contrast ratio with rich, dark text. It is very easy on the eyes unlike bright LCD computers and phones, and is readable in direct sunlight. Another benefit of this technology is that it's extremely energy-efficient; a battery will hold a charge for roughly 7,500 page-turns, or 2 weeks of regular reading.

The majority of countries have access to over 400,000 ebooks from the online Kindle store. Most new release and bestseller ebooks cost $9.99 in the US and $11.99 everywhere else, with the exception of the countries in the EU, where an additional 15% VAT is applied to ebook purchases.

A nice perk with Amazon, they allow you to download a sample of any book for free so you can read the beginning to see if you like it or not. And the Kindle reader comes with 2 GB of memory to hold about 1,500 ebooks and personal documents.

In addition to ebooks, Kindle International owners have access to several dozen international newspaper and magazine subscriptions that are far cheaper than their paper cousins. Here are some newspapers Kindle users can expect to receive wirelessly each morning: The Times, Daily Mail, The Independent, The Daily Telegraph, Le Monde, Les Echos, Frankfurter Allgemeine, Handelsblatt, The Irish Times, El País, Diariocritico, AS, Corriere Della Sera, and La Stampa.

Aside from Amazon, there are a number of websites that have free, non-DRM protected ebooks that will work on a Kindle just fine. Some examples are Project Gutenberg, Feedbooks, and Baen's free library. Another website, MobiPocket, has nearly 10,000 free English ebooks along with approximately 100 free German language ebooks, 700 French, 275 Finnish, 170 Dutch, and several other languages too.

Additionally, the Kindle reader will play music and is compatible with audiobooks from Audible.

The new International Kindle e-readers have a global AT&T modem that can pick up a free wireless signal in over 100 counties. This includes access to Wikipedia, and a few countries have free internet with the Kindle's experimental web browser, but because of current cellular bandwidth issues and increased wireless costs abroad it's not available everywhere.

Here's the complete country list and wireless coverage map for the Kindle Reader, along with some additional resources.

Portable Ebook Reader - Amazon's Wireless Kindles

I have friends that are daily readers, for the most part these friends have a totally different circle of friends they associate with than what I have. When we are together we just don't have much enjoyable to talk about.

A day in a busy life!

After a long day at work I shut off the lights, turn on the alarm, lock the door and make my way to the car. Its dark and besides one other car mine is the only one in the lot. I get in and start it up, wait for it to warm a little before I go. The parking lot at work is empty but once I get out on the road I see everyone else is definitely not at home, I'm barely out of the lot when I'm waiting for the second flow of cars to get through the light this time so I can actually start making my way home.

Traffic is bad tonight, probably because winter is here and the roads were sanded by the city because of the threat of incoming snow. You get that sand and very small rock smacked up against your windshield if you don't keep a good distance from the car in front of you.

My wife calls as I'm trying to slow down to get out of the spray of rocks hitting my car and not being rear ended at the same time. "Can you pick up some milk on the way home?" "Oh and the kids would like some of those toaster things you bought last time." Yes Dear!

Home is just a few streets away now, all I can think of is having dinner, taking care of that leaking sink my wife has been calling me about all day, and going to bed early. "Hi I'm home", Shelly says the toilet in the main bath is plugged up, can you take a look at it? My wife is at the dinning room table with Sam, looks like they are working on his math homework again.

Toilet works again and I'm cleaned up, my shoes are off and I'm thinking about my noisy stomach that's telling me its time for dinner. "Hey we are going to be awhile here with this math homework, can you make dinner?"

Yes Dear! An hour later we are all sitting down to dinner, kids are complaining about their homework, although I'm not really there, I just want to go to bed. "You need to take Shelly to the Mall to get a new coat, her coat was taken at school today and she needs a new one for tomorrow, its going to be very cold.

Time spent with the kids one on one, like when we are going to the store or something like that isn't really that bad. I enjoy the time talking with the kids like that but "You need to be more careful about losing things, we are not made of money you know!" Got to stay in parental mode until I can crawl into my warm bed for the night.

Its a little after 10pm now and the kids are both in bed, I'm ready for bed as well. "I lost my hair brush between the seats in the car today and I'm going to need it for the kids first thing in the morning, can you get it out tonight before you go to bed?"

Yes Dear! Its now 11pm and nothing is going to stop me now. "I'm going to bed". I'll be in when I finish fixing Shelly's pants.

I get ready for bed and slide in between the covers and reach up to set the alarm, there's the Amazon Kindle that I borrowed from my wife's brother the school teacher, I bought a book for it last night and forgot about it. Last night wasn't much different than tonight except the kids were in bed earlier and I hit the Kindle ebook reader a little earlier.

Night light is on, I"m comfy in bed reading my new ebook on the Kindle ebook reader I borrowed from my brother in law. Having a ebook reader makes me feel like I'm hi-tech or part of the "in" crowd. I do kinda feel that way but for years since I got out of school I've always wanted to be a more active reader. Reading is good for you! Its keeps your mind active which in turn keeps you more active.

I had to buy my own Kindle because My wife's brother wanted his back, but My Amazon Kindle 2 ebook reader is for sure the best thing I've bought in years. I love reading with it! Reading has become an almost daily thing for me, if I want a new book I don't even have to get out of bed. I browse through Amazon's book store with my Kindle, wirelessly, pick my new book and in less than 60 seconds its on my screen!

My wife likes to steal my Kindle and read her stuff, and once in a while I'll let the kids use it. I love my Kindle ebook reader and probably will end up buying them for the rest of the family. No cords to hook up to anything and never a bill for the wireless service that comes with the Kindle. Internet browsing, check email, whatever you want to do online with your Kindle is free. Free Internet with Kindle!!

This article got a little off track, the point I was trying to make is, even with a busy life style like I have the Portable ebook reader has changed my life for the better.

I love to read now, and getting a new book is cheap and only takes a minute. I can get a new book while laying in bed. I feel sharper and more intelligent, reading I believe has got my brain juices flowing again and I feel good about it.

Amazon's Kindle 3 Review - Core Features

Amazon's Kindle 3 is a favorite e-Book reader among book lovers. Every design and features of kindle 3 is optimized for reading in the most pleasurable way. There are no technological inconveniences that most e-Book readers suffer from. It is considered the best standalone e-Book reading device in the market, and there are certain reasons that makes Kindle 3 stand apart from other common e-readers. Listed below are the core features and the reasons why it is so popular among avid readers:

E Ink Pearl Display Screen

The use of the latest E Ink technology known as "Pearl" makes Kindle 3 an absolute reading device with 50% better contrast from its previous generation. The texts are sharp and very clear which is much better than LCD screen displays.

The screen display of Kindle 3 actually looks like real paper print and not like a computer or Smart-phone screen. After spending 7 - 8 hours working on a computer screen I find it unworkable to read books from LCD screen at night. The E Ink Pearl screen is very gentle on the eyes and pleasant to read. It doesn't emit light like LCD screen and hence there is no eyestrain and no glare while reading in the bright sunlight.

Along with the E Ink Pearl high-contrast display Kindle 3 is further optimized with Amazon's proprietary Waveform and font technology enabling Kindle to turn pages faster by 20% and making fonts darker and sharper.

Optimized Reading Design

Kindle 3 is extremely light and portable with just 8.5 ounces of weight and barely 1/3 of an inch thick. It is easy to hold in one hand while reading for long hours and the page-turning buttons are located on both sides if you change hand. Unlike most electronic devices it doesn't get hot and you can read as long as you like.

Kindle 3 allow you to change text size while reading any books or periodicals. There are eight different font sizes to choose your preferences. It also has three font styles and not just one standard font style as in the case of other e-Book readers.

Longer Battery Life

The battery run-time of Kindle 3 is really good. It last up to a month of reading from a single full charge battery. This is an important feature when you plan to read books uninterrupted and conveniently. It is disappointing with most e-readers when you realized that you need to recharge the battery again after a couple of hours in the middle of some interesting read. LCD screens consume a lot of power and hardly last up to a week from a single charge even with the best technology.

Built-in Wi-Fi

Wherever you go Kindle automatically detect Wi-Fi networks allowing you to search and download books on the go. You can download books in less than 60 second into you device itself without the need to connect to a computer and transfer books. With the Kindle you enjoy free Wi-Fi connection with AT&T hotspots.

Kindle Store

There are more than 700,000 titles available for download on Kindle store. This includes almost all the selection of books people want to read and look for. Out of the available titles, over 550,000 titles are for $9.99 or less. There are over 1.8 million free out-of-copyrights, pre-1923 titles available to download including many classic works such as Alice in Wonderland, Pride and Prejudice and Treasure Island.

If you like reading, Kindle 3 is indeed the best dedicated e-Book reader available in the market. It is worth your money with all the features optimized for pleasant reading. Kindle 3 is certainly a device to recommend for ultimate reading experience.

Amazon Kindle Fire Review - A Brief Look At Amazon's New Tablet Computer

Tablet computers have started to really take off, thanks to products like Apple's iPad. It has opened up the doors for this new style of computing. Up until recently, there were other manufacturers trying to compete in this market, but having very little success. Amazon has now stepped into this market with their all new Amazon Kindle Fire tablet. Many are viewing it as the first real competitor to go up against the iPad while others see it as a completely different product. Read this Kindle Fire review to see what all they hype is about.

This Amazon Kindle Fire was announced at a press event on September 28, 2011. There were long time rumors that Amazon wanted to release a color tablet. Many thought it would be called the Kindle color. The previous kindle models were more of just ebook readers and came in Grey scale rather than color. They were also limited in function, such as no web browser and were mainly used to download and read kindle books and magazines. While they had an internet connection, without a browser you could not go online.

The Kindle Fire is a completely different product and it is based around the popular Google android operating system. Android first started out as an OS for phones, but has recently graduated to run on tablet computers. So what makes the Kindle Fire different from the old Kindles? First off it has a beautiful 7 inch color display made of Gorilla glass. This insures the screen is strong and scratch resistant. In fact Gorilla glass is up to 7 times harder than normal polymers. The tablet runs on a dual-core processor that makes multitasking and switching applications a breeze.

One of the biggest draws to this tablet compared to others is the price. The Kindle Fire will be sold for just $199. This is a significantly lower price than many other tablet computing systems. Amazon is able to offer such a bargain price because the device is tied into their Eco-system. This means you have direct access to purchase ebooks, music and movies from their ever expanding catalog. They have even recently partnered to offer streaming movies and TV programs.

While there is no 3G access on this device it runs on WI-fi. So anywhere you have a wireless connection, you can browse and download content. One of the biggest factors that differentiates the Kindle Fire from other tablets that have failed in the past is the Amazon app store. This gives users access to thousands of Android games and applications. They even feature a "free app of the day" to allow you to get free content. Many popular games such as Angry birds have been featured through this program.

As far as how the amazon Kindle Fire tablet stacks up against the Apple iPad 2, it is a much more economical device. If you want a device that will allow you to read ebooks, magazines and to play movies and music then this is a great device. Movies look great on the IPS display and the Amazon app store will allow you to download and play games. With the holiday season coming up, it makes a great gift and it is sure to be a hit.

If you want to get more information on this new device and a more comprehensive critique, visit Kindle Fire review. There, you will also find where to buy Kindle Fire at the best price.
