What I like about the Kindle wireless reading device is that it is revolutionary. It has changed the way we will relate to the written word. As when CDs replaced vinyl records and tapes, and as CDs were superseded by mp3 players, so the Kindle has surpassed the centuries old idea of the written word and it is only a matter of time before most people have a digital reading device.
The Kindle is only a 1/3 of an inch in thickness. It weighs 10.2 ounces, lighter than a paperback book; and it is about the same height as a standard paperback. Reading from the Kindle is very much like reading from paper. The technology is impeccable - there is no glare or irritating back light. The text is crisp and sharp and it is as easy to follow as turning a page.
It is, however, the fact that the Kindle has 3G wireless technology that makes it a truly breakthrough product. You can access the internet for free. No monthly fees or sign up payments. With just a click of a button you are on the internet. So far the Kindle can access the internet in over 100 countries. In countries like the UK, Japan, France, Spain, Italy, the USA, Norway and Turkey coverage covers nearly every foot of the country.
Once you are on the internet via your Kindle wireless reading device you can choose from millions of books, magazines and newspapers. And much of it is free: any book published before 1923 is out of copyright, and thus available for free download to your Kindle. At present Kindle offers over 1.8 million free books for download. A book can take as little as 60 seconds to download. That's incredible. The Kindle can hold 1,500 books. That is a huge library space. You can have every word written by Shakespeare, Milton, Webster, Defoe, Hugo, Dumas, Balzac, Tolstoy and all the other shining stars in the constellation of great world literature at your finger tips immediately, and for only the price of the Kindle. The Kindle costs $189. If you buy a cheap Kindle and download 20 books for free, presuming each one of those books would cost you $10, then you have paid for the price of your Kindle. That is great value.
And that is not all. All the latest books are available. The best sellers, the potboilers, anything you could imagine. As with downloading new music you are only limited by your knowledge and imagination. The average price of a new book download to your Kindle is about $9. At present there are over 600,000 titles to purchase. This number is increasing every day. And many of these titles include text to speech files so those with poor eyesight can also enjoy books.
The Kindle needs to be charged only once a week (with the internet connection on) or 2 weeks (with the internet connection off). It can be read as comfortably inside as out. It fits nicely into a bag. It is easy to use. It allows you to check your email. I can see no bad points to the Kindle other than you will get addicted to collecting books and want more space; which you can get by up-grading to the Kindle DX (3,500 books).
