10 Simple Steps To Self-Publishing Your Amazon Kindle E-Book

The Kindle is increasing in popularity every day and this is driving a huge demand for Amazons e-book reader. After only a short time the huge demand is making it extremely difficult for Amazon.com to keep up with the high number of daily orders. Whether you simply write in your spare time or as a full-time income, you can take advantage of this craze and monetize the ever-growing popularity of the Amazon Kindle by self-publishing your own e-book. Here are the key steps to self-publishing your own e-book and selling it quickly on the most popular online platform of its' kind: Amazon.com.

Step One: Creating An E-book Outline

This is the most important part of your Amazon Kindle e-book; you must choose a niche. This is a perfect time to decide exactly what type of e-book you'd like to self-publish. Maybe you wish to write about romance, possibly an easy how-to guide, or even horror... Whichever niche you select, start by creating an outline. Creating an outline will not only help you gather your thoughts, but will assist you in ensuring that you cover the topic chosen in a methodical and in-depth manner.

Step Two: Start Writing

Once you're ready to write your Amazon Kindle e-book, it's time to reference your outline. Having your outline nearby, you're able to write your e-book quickly and easily, while avoiding the plague experienced by most writers: writers' block. Be sure to also use a popular word processor, such as Microsoft Word, which provides excellent language, spelling, and grammar tools that you can easily use to "comb" through your e-book from the introduction to the conclusion. Although most e-book writers tend to focus on length, just cover the necessary points and elements of your topic. Length isn't important. However, never fill you e-books with "fluff"! Your reader's aren't looking for "fluff" or "filler" within your e-book, but rather solutions to their problems and desires.

Step Three: Proofreading

Microsoft Word, although effective, is not 100% guaranteed, and therefore it is imperative to seek the assistance of a third-party, such as an acquaintance, family member, or even a relative to review and evaluate your e-book for possible errors. Better an acquaintance locate an error early, than a customer, or worse yet, Amazon.com! So remember, always proofread your content prior to submission.

Step Four: Setup Your Free Account

In order to list your e-book for sell on the Amazon.com platform, you must create an account. Don't worry. It's absolutely free of cost. Simply visit https://dtp.amazon.com/ on your favorite internet browser and follow the simple instructions; however, if you already have an account with Amazon.com, feel free to simply use the account you already have.

Step Five: Self-Publish Your Amazon Kindle E-book

By going to the bottom of the page mentioned above and selecting the "Self-Publish With Us", you will gain immediate access to the Amazon Kindle section for authors wishing to self-publish their very own e-books.

Step Six: Proceed To Your Amazon Kindle Dashboard

Once you've successfully accessed your Amazon Kindle dashboard, just select the "Add A New Item" link, and you are well on your way to self-publishing your very own Amazon Kindle e-book (you will only be able to access this dashboard after logging-in to your account, so be sure to do so before completing this step).

Step Seven: Tell Amazon.com About Your New E-book

At this step in the process, Amazon.com will need additional information about your e-book prior to submission. Simply complete the form by providing the title of your Amazon Kindle e-book, your name, and a descriptive summary of exactly what your e-book is all about. The summary of your e-book is the most important part! Give as much detail as you can, seeing as this will be viewable by potential customers, and it is also a prime opportunity to "sell your e-book" with your words. So, take your time and word your summary correctly and accurately.

Step Eight: Submit Your Amazon Kindle E-book

Simply submit your new Kindle e-book to the Amazon.com platform. By locating the chosen file of your e-book on your computer, you can easily select it, submit it to Amazon.com, and it will be easily transformed into digital text, which is the preferred format for Amazon Kindle e-books.

Step Nine: Review Your E-book And Correct Any Mistakes

You can easily skip this step, but skipping isn't wise! Take a few brief minutes after submitting your content to check for possible formatting errors. Although formatting errors are rare, they could become apparent. Therefore it's important to preview your content in the digital text format and fix any formatting issues that may have transpired during file conversion.

Step Ten: How Much Would You Like To Sell Your E-book For?

This is the fun part! You get to actually set the price for your Amazon Kindle e-book. Just use your own discretion, but remember that Kindle e-books with less content often sell for less. Although your niche market will obviously expect to pay a little less for your e-book since you're brand new, don't undersell yourself. At the same time, don't oversell either. Just evaluate your market in comparison to your experience and set a fair price. Remember, the objective isn't to make a million dollars "out of the gate", but rather to gain loyal customers that you can sell to over and over again.

Well, from these quick ten steps, you can see just how easy it is to self-publish your own Amazon Kindle e-book. It's easy to do, but it's even easier to make money from. After you've completed the ten steps above, you can either wait for the sales to "roll-in", or you can be proactive and actively market and advertise your Amazon sales page by driving traffic to it. Regardless of the method you choose for promotion, if you write for fun or for money, you can easily take advantage of the popularity of the Amazon Kindle platform, all while making a handsome profit at the same time!

From Word Manuscript to Kindle Ebook in Three Easy Steps

If you've self-published a short report that you're selling in PDF format, consider converting it to Kindle format and selling it in Amazon's digital downloads store. Prices you can realistically charge there range from $.99 to $9.99, with your share of purchases either 35 or 70 percent. But perhaps the greater benefit than the income is the opportunity through the Amazon Kindle store to get your material in front of customers from around the world who wouldn't otherwise ever run across your ideas and talents.

About a year ago, I struggled to take a paperback book I had nicely designed using the powerhouse publishing program InDesign and convert it so I could sell it on Kindle. I tried three different conversion tools, and all of them produced grossly unacceptable results. Frustrated, yet not ready to shell out the cash to hire someone else to reformat the book, I put this project on the back burner.

More recently, tempted by tales of colleagues experiencing results with short ebooks on Kindle, I decided to test the waters with a collection of articles that I'd compiled into an ebook. After sifting through many how-to articles and videos on Kindle conversions, here are the steps I followed that worked out perfectly not only for my experimental 30-page ebook but for several other short works and then the more complex paperback that had earlier stumped me.

Step One: Setting Up Styles in Your Word Document

One key to success is keeping your Microsoft Word formatting as simple as possible. Don't worry about selecting fonts or defining fancy formatting. Instead, define and use what Word calls "styles."

To do this, click on "Styles" from Word's "Format" menu, then one by one define the following three basic styles:

1) Body Text: Times New Roman 12, single spacing, no other special effects

2) Heading 1: Based on no style, Times New Roman 16 points, bold, page break before

3) Heading 2: Based on no style, Times New Roman 14 points, bold, no page break before

Then code all regular paragraphs in your manuscript as Body Text by highlighting them and clicking on "Body Text" for them in the "Styles" menu. Code your chapter titles as "Heading 1" and any subheads as "Heading 2."

If you need additional formatting styles, define a new style for it in the "Styles" menu instead of manually clicking buttons on your computer keyboard to make the text look the way you think it should. Unless everything in your Word document is coded consistently in such styles, you'll see chaos in the Kindle version.

Step Two: Save Your Word File as RTF

When you have finishing coding everything in your Word manuscript, save the file first as a ".doc" file, then as a rich text file - ".rtf." The RTF file is what you need for Step Three.

Step Three: Convert to Mobi Format using Calibre

Calibre is a free ebook conversion program you can download at http://www.calibre-ebook.com. Open the program and click on the "plus" icon in the upper left to load the RTF version of your ebook into Calibre. Then click the "i" icon" in the upper left to fill in such information as your name and the title of the ebook.

With your book title highlighted on the main screen of the program, click on the next icon, with two curved arrows, which gets you to the conversion function. There are a lot of options that come up, but you only need to concern yourself with two of them. In the upper right corner, where it says "Output Format," select "MOBI." Then in the left column, click on "Page Setup" and then under "Output Profile," select "Kindle."

Click "OK," and the program converts your file to something you can upload to Kindle. When the rotating circle in the lower right corner stops spinning, double-click on your title on Calibre's main screen to see how your file will look in the Kindle e-reader.

If the e-reader shows formatting that looks wildly wrong, then you didn't define and code your styles in Word carefully enough. Go back to the ".doc" file that you saved at the beginning of Step Two and check your styles, then repeat Steps Two and Three. You may need to do some trial and error in redefining the styles to get things like bulleted lists looking right in Kindle.

When your text looks fine in Calibre's Kindle simulator, you are ready to upload the.mobi version of your ebook to Amazon. You can get that process started by going to http://kdp.amazon.com/. In just a day or so after you've uploaded your ebook, you and the rest of the online universe will see it available for sale in the Kindle store. Happy ebook sales!

How to Publish Your Kindle EBook in 5 Easy Steps

One million kindles.

That's how many kindles Amazon was selling every single week over the holidays. It's provided a huge boost to the self publishing industry as new kindle owners furiously seek to stock their new toys with content. Self publishing may have once been last resort of writers spurned by publishers and desperate to see there name in print but this is no longer the case, these days there is a lot of money to be made in self publishing.

Take for example writer John Locke who sold over 1 million eBooks or self published author JR Konrath who recently blogged that he made over a $100,000 in three weeks. And it's not just a few writers at the top anymore. There is a steadily increasing group of self published authors who make good six figure incomes self publishing their own work.

And where does it all start? With self publishing your book of course.

Amazon has put a huge amount of money and resources into developing and promoting its kindle platform. It's no wonder then that it has become so popular with readers and writers alike. This guide will show you how you can publish your own Kindle eBook are five easy steps.

Step One: Logging In

This first step assumes that you have already created your Amazon account. If you haven't created an account yet simply visit the Amazon home page and click the tab marked "start here" at the top of the screen. The step by step instructions make signing up for your new account incredibly simple.

Once you have created your account you will need to access the Kindle Publishing Dashboard. You can reach this screen by clicking on the tab at the bottom of the screen which says "Independently Publish with us" you then select the "Kindle Books" tab from the left side of the screen.

Once you reach this screen you will be given the opportunity to log in with your Amazon account. Do this step now.

Step Two: Adding a New Title

You are now inside the Kindle Direct Publishing Dashboard. You will see that there is a yellow button which is marked "Add New Title" click on this to get started.

Step Three: Creating a Description

You are now at the heart of the Self Publishing Process. The next step is to fill out some information about your book. First enter the title of your book into the field marked "Book name:" If your book is part of an ongoing series (which is a good marketing strategy!) then you will want to click the box marked "This book is part of a series" you can then enter the series title and what volume your book is.

Once you have completed this step it is time to fill in a description of your book. If you have ever purchased (or even browsed) Amazon before then you will now that below any book is a description of your book. If you want to know what kind of information you should include here take a look at the back of a paperback book. This should give you a good idea of what kind of information you should write. Remember you are trying to sell people on the idea of trying your book so make the description interesting. You might want to include quotes from someone who has read your book and liked it (if they are well known all the better). Or you may like to include a short excerpt that draws the reader in. Have a look at some of the best selling books on Kindle and see what they have done to promote their books in the description. They are best sellers for a reason!

Step Three: Add your name

The next step is to add your name (or someone else's) to the book. When you click on the "Add contributors" button you will be given a list of ways you can include the names and descriptions of people who were involved in the book. Here you can select author and write your own name. If you are writing under a pen name or if someone else wrote the book, include that name instead.

Step Four: Publishing Rights

If you are reading this article then this is probably the first time you have published your book which is great because it makes the next step really easy. You should now see a series of fields for language, publishing date, publisher and ISBN. If you haven't published before you can leave all these fields as they are. Don't write anything in these fields and move on.

Next you will need to affirm that you own the rights to publish the book and that it is not a public domain work (a book published by someone else whose copyright has expired). You can publish public domain books but there are special rules around it. If this is your own original work simply tick the field saying "This is not a public domain domain book and I hold the necessary publishing rights."

Below the publishing rights you will find the Categories and keywords section. You are allowed to choose two different categories for your book. There are a lot of different categories so you will have to spend some time to find which are the most appropriate for your book. If you are publishing a fiction book make sure that you include it into the Fiction parent category.

Finally enter some keywords for your book. These are words that people might enter when they are searching for a book in your niche. If you wrote a book on tomato gardening some keywords might be gardening, tomato gardening and tomato gardens. Fill this space with up to seven different keywords.

Step Five: Upload your Book and Cover

Now its time to "Upload Your Book Cover" this is the section where you upload a graphics file from your own computer which will be used as cover graphic in the Amazon search results. You can choose not to include one but I wouldn't recommend it. In fact having a good cover is one of the key things which will get your book noticed. You may write a great story but if the cover sucks then nobody is going to buy it.

There are lots of different options for creating a cover; you can use Photoshop or the open source alternative GIMP. Or you can pay some one else to design your cover. Visit Fivver.com and type in ebook cover and you will see a host of different designers willing to make your cover for only $5.

Once you have your cover you can upload it by clicking on the "Browse for image" button. This will then allow you to upload the graphics file from your computer.

The last and most important step is to upload your content. You don't have to do anything to tricky to upload your file. A doc file is perfect. Simply write your story in a simple font and stay away from fancy features such as graphics and bullet posts. To upload the file click on the "browse" button and find the doc file on your computer. By the way if you don't have Microsoft Office you can use the free open source alternative Open Office.

Congratulations you are now a published author! All you need to do now is promote your book and get some readers and you too can join the ranks of self published authors who are making a good living doing what they love.

Amazon Kindle How-To Series - Fast Steps to Creating Free Kindle E-Books

Fans of Amazon's Kindle e-book reader have plenty of content from which to choose. Amazon offers over 260,000 (as of this writing) e-books, newspapers, magazines, and other publications that can be transmitted by wireless to the Kindle. With all of this content you may wonder if you'll ever need another source for your reading enjoyment. But think of all of the other content you may have stored away in your computer in the form of Adobe Acrobat .pdf files, text files, or .HTML files you've downloaded from the Internet. Wouldn't it be great to be able to put these on your Kindle as well?

As a matter of fact you can! There are several ways you can do this. Amazon offers a file conversion service for Kindle owners. Check our web site at the address below for an article that provides the steps to use Amazon's service. But, there is another way that we'll describe in this article and that is with the Mobipocket Creator software. Mobipocket Creator software is designed to convert documents into the Mobi .prc format that can be read by the Mobipocket e-book Reader software for PCs and for phones using the Palm Os, Windows Mobile, Symbian Os, and Blackberry operating systems. Interestingly Amazon owns Mobipocket and the Amazon Kindle's book format is based on the Mobipocket format.

What does this mean to you? It means that files you convert with the Mobipocket Creator software can be loaded onto your Kindle through your computer and read as any other Kindle e-book! Here are the instructions for converting your files with Mobipocket Creator software:

1. Realize that this software ONLY works with unprotected files. If the file you want to convert have any sort of DRM (digital rights management) protection then you cannot convert your books.

2. Download the Mobipocket Creator software from Mobipocket's web site - you'll find the link below. Make sure you download the "Publisher" edition and not the "Home" edition. The current version is 4.2.

3. Install Mobipocket Creator software on your PC following the installation instructions.

4. Open Mobipocket Creator - you will be at the "Home" page.

5. You will see "Import From Existing File" on the right side of the "Home" page. For this example we'll convert an Adobe Acrobat file so choose "Adobe PDF" from the menu - this will bring you to the Import File Wizard.

6. Choose the file you wish to convert (using the "Browse" button) and the location in which you wish to place the imported file (again - use the "Browse" button). Click the "Import" button.

7. You will be brought to a work screen that shows you the Publication File or files you've imported. From here you can either build your final output to save on your Kindle, or modify some of the options for your e-book.

8. If you wish to add a Cover Image or Table of Contents choose the appropriate menu items under the "View" menu on the left side of the program window. You also can modify a number of settings for your e-book and add or modify the book's metadata by choosing other options under the "View" menu. Note that you do not have to modify any of the settings under the "View" menu - they are there as options for your use if you choose.

9. When you are done click the "Build" button on the toolbar at the top of the program window. You will be brought to the "Build Publication" window. You can choose the compression settings for your e-book ("Standard" is fine for your Kindle) and also encryption options (choose "No Encryption"). Click the "Build" button just above the progress bars when you are ready to create your e-book.

10. You will go next to the "Build finished" window. This window will let you know if you've successfully created your e-book. You may get a message that says "Build succeeded but with warnings." Normally this indicates a minor error or notification such as when you choose not to add a cover to your e-book. This will not prevent you from loading the e-book onto your Kindle.

11. Click the "Open folder containing eBook" then click "OK." The folder you provided in step 6 will open and you will see a number of files. This will include your initial Adobe PDF file, plus files with the extension .html, .opf, .xml, and .jpg. You also will see the file you need to transfer to your Kindle, the file with the extension .prc.

12. Attach your Kindle to your computer using the USB cable. Open your Kindle and locate the "documents" folder. Copy the .prc file you created with Mobipocket Creator into your Kindle's download folder. Close the Kindle > documents window and disconnect your Kindle by opening "My Computer", right clicking on the "Kindle" drive icon, and selecting "Eject" from the menu.

13. Your new document will appear on your Kindle's Home Page. You may need to refresh your Home Page view by pressing and holding down the "ALT" key and then pressing the "Z" key.

14. You can now enjoy your new Kindle e-book.

This process will work for Microsoft Word (.doc), Adobe Acrobat (.pdf), Text (.txt), and HTML files. You can download the Mobipocket Creator software from the Mobipocket web site - http://www.mobipocket.com.

By the way - if your new e-book file does not appear the way you expect on your Kindle 2 and you wish to delete if from your Kindle simply highlight the book and move the 5-way navigator to the left. The "delete" button will appear, press down on the 5-way navigator and then confirm the delete.

Congratulations! You now know how-to convert files into e-books you can read on your Kindle wireless reading device.
