5 Reasons Why the Kindle Touch Is Still the Best eReader on the Market

Over the last two years the eReader market has really heated up. Where the Kindle was the only serious choice, it is now joined by the Nook Simple Touch, Sony PRS-T1 and Kobo Touch. These later devices have really closed the gap and the Nook Simple Touch especially is giving the Kindle a real run for its money. However, having tested all the leading eReaders myself for my website, I can report that although the gap has definitely closed, the Kindle Touch is still the one for me and here's why.

1) The Kindle Store

Anyone who has ever used Amazon will tell you how easy and intuitive it is to use and Amazon's Kindle store is no different. Whether you are searching for ebooks, looking for reviews, looking for special offers or just downloading an ebook, its simple navigation and layout make it a breeze. Simply the best out there and crucially the pricing is very competitive too.

2) It has a 3G model

The Kindle Touch (and the older Kindle keyboard) are the only eReaders out there at the moment that also have a 3G model. This is invaluable if like me you are always out and about. You don't need to worry about finding somewhere with Wi-Fi, you can just access the Kindle store, download books, surf the web and even access your social networks whenever and pretty much wherever you want.

3) Great Audio Functions

Unlike it's closest competitor - the Nook Simple Touch, the Kindle Touch has audio functionality. This means you can listen to audiobooks, download and listen to MP3s and of course use the cool text-to-speech feature. This allows the Kindle to read content out loud for you including summaries of magazines and newspapers.

4) Free Cloud Backup

This lets you backup your entire library of books, magazines or newspapers onto Amazon's Servers. This gives you complete piece of mind in case you lose or break your Kindle. You can then re-download for free wirelessly whenever you want.

5) X-Ray Feature

This feature allows you to really explore any book you are reading. Just tap and you can see all the passages of the book that mention particular topics or places of interest, historical figures, fictional characters or other ideas and then get more descriptive details from Wikipedia about it. It really adds to the experience of reading an ebook especially if you are reading a non-fiction book such as something from history or an autobiography.

Amazon Kindle E-Book Reader - Still a Favorite One Year Later

I received my Amazon Kindle E-Book Reader as a gift just over a year ago. After researching the Sony Reader and the Nook, I always came back to the simplicity of the Kindle as my first choice. In the last year there have been new technology developments such as the iPad and others, although the Kindle still wins for several reasons.

UPDATE: It's now been two years since I received my Kindle, and I still love the simple, stream-lined features it provides me as an avid reader.

Why I Chose and Still Choose the Amazon Kindle:

1. Simplicity. I wanted something to replace my towering bookshelf and simplify my life. Still dedicated to being almost exclusively a reading device, it isn't bogged down with a lot of software or utilities that I don't use.

2. Convenience. Being an avid reader naturally brings me to Amazon's site frequently. I purchase many items in addition to books there, and for Christmas shopping they are hard to beat. I find myself reader more books but actually saving money since the prices are very reasonable.

3. Selection. The Kindle Store at Amazon.com has over 620,000 books for purchase. In addition, they have 1.8 million free e-books that I can download in seconds, many of them classics that I had always wanted to read. The world's bestselling magazines and newspapers are also available, often with a free trial before purchasing a regular subscription.

4. Built-In Dictionary. I used to always read with a dictionary close by. With the Kindle's built-in dictionary, I just move the cursor to the word to get the definition. It saves time and helps increase my knowledge. With the old method, I often just skipped looking up the definition rather than opening the big dictionary over and over.

5. Portability. The Kindle 2's small size is perfect for the frequent traveler. My entire library fits easily in my purse.

6. Durability. I purchased the two-year extended warranty when I first received my Kindle, just in case, although I've never had to use it. My Kindle E-Book Reader has survived several falls onto tile floor in the last year. Even after one particularly hard fall, all I had to do was re-start it and everything was fine.

7. The Price Has Recently Dropped $70. While I received the Kindle as a gift at the original price, Amazon has decreased the price recently by $70, making it much more affordable anyone who likes to read, not only the bookworm in your family. It is sure to be a hit this Christmas with the cheaper price and the new widespread interest in electronic book reader devices.

As the holiday shopping season begins, keep in mind the Amazon Kindle E-Book Reader for that person on your list who has everything. The Kindle gives them the platform to buy and enjoy the books, magazines, newspapers, and blogs they love, all in this simple and small device.

Kindle Fire Still Hot

Kindle Fire sales are down since the holidays, which is to be expected. However, according to Amazon, the Fire is still doing very well. Amazon sold about 6 million Kindle Fires during the quarter that included the holiday season, and it looks like this quarter will see about 3 million head out of the warehouse.

While this is a significant drop from the holidays, that is no surprise, and with Amazon on pace to sell 12 million Kindle Fires this year, they will still outpace the number that many analysts thought they would have this year!
