Kindle DX in the Education System

The future of technology especially in the education system can now be seen through the rise of trend in the production of these wireless reading devices. In less than a year, Amazon was able to release two new models for Kindle, which is their very own wireless electronic book reader. Kindle's latest version, Kindle DX which was released June of 2009, has a weight of 18.9 ounces - just your average hardback novel. Its electronic paper display uses an e-ink and a 16-level gray scale that provides the same feel and readability of typical newsprint.

Just last month, Amazon launched their Kindle DX Pilot Project in University of Virginia's Darden School of Business. Darden is one of the schools that will participate in Amazon's pilot education project using their new wireless electronic book reading technology. This program includes randomly choosing students who will use Amazon's Kindle DX throughout an academic year for free. Should these students choose to keep their wireless device, they can purchase it at a discounted price.

During the Kindle DX Pilot Project in Darden School, more than 300 first-year MBA students arrived where 62 of them were presented with the box that contained the Amazon's newest wireless electronic book reader. This pilot group will test the new device, including a 9.7-inch electronic paper display that has an automatic rotation depending on the orientation you prefer. It also has a wireless network connectivity that gives access to over 300,000 e-books, magazines, top newspapers, and case studies from Darden Business Publishing are now available on their Kindle DX. This new wireless reading device also provides its users the ability to highlight or take notes, and can store up to 3,500 electronic books.

Other schools that are included in Amazon's Kindle DX Pilot Project are Arizona State University, Case Western Reserve University, Pace University, Reed College, University of Washington's Foster School of Business, and Princeton University. Some university presses are also participating in Amazon's campaign in integrating their wireless electronic book readers inside the classroom. The University of California Press, Yale University Press,  and Oxford University Press are among the first to have their books available for sale through Kindle.

Amazon's wireless electronic book readers certainly have its own appeal, especially among students since it can be a very practical way of carrying and accessing all, if not most, of the reading materials they need.
