I got a bit tired of reading the “classics” and decided to go for a trashy romance novel this time. I hadn’t heard of “The Chase Brothers” series, nor the author, Lauren Dane, but the first book of the series, Giving Chase
was available for free on the Kindle, so I decided to give it a whirl.
The book is set in Georgia and the author does a good job of allowing you to hear the characters’ southern accents. If you’re from the Northeast (like I am) the way they speak can be somewhat distracting and seemingly stereotypical. But it may very well be the way people from Georgia talk.
The basic plot is that pretty, smart, funny, sexy girl Maggie doesn’t realize how beautiful she is because she was the sister of a beauty queen and always told by her bitchy mother that she was the ugly one. She meets the unbelievably handsome Chase brothers who she assumes are totally out of her league, but who all fall totally in love with her.
Stuff happens, but mostly the book is about Maggie and Kyle Chase falling in love. There were some steamy sex scenes which were pretty graphic and hot. But not much happens other than the love story. Towards the end Maggie’s stalker comes back to wreak some havoc, but it almost seemed as if it were an afterthought to provide some tension.
Overall, the story was a good, quick read. I read it in one night and stayed up way too late to finish it. If you’re looking for a nice, enjoyable love story, you’ll definitely like Giving Chase. If you like more twists and turns to your romance, you’d probably find this one a wee bit on the boring side. I’d give it around 3 stars out of 5.
On a separate note, I don’t really like the book cover, as it’s not at all how I pictured the characters, but maybe that’s just me!
