Amazon Kindle DX - 9 Best Features In The New Kindle Ebook Reader

The DX line of Amazon's Kindle eBook readers is known to sport a larger display than its regular models. Starting with the first DX released in May of 2009 considered a 2nd generation counterpart of the Kindle 2, the new 3rd generation Kindle DX took off in January 2010. Now with a graphite (dark gray) body released in July along with a drop in price from $489 to $379 at Amazon.

The new darker body does improve a perception of better contrast, considering that the white body is actually a lot whiter than the white background on the display. It sports all the nifty features of the Kindle-3 and more. The larger screen is great but there is a lot more to this electronic gadget. Check this out:

1. Bigger is better. That's what the Kindle DX screen has with its 9.7inch electrophoretic e-paper screen with a 50% higher contrast than on any previous model. With a 1200 x 824 resolution, 16 greyscale and a contrast ratio of 10:1, it's easily the best e-paper display among eBooks.

2. It's also the thinnest one, at a third of an inch thick, though heavier at 18.9 ounces compared with the regular Kindle at 8.7 ounces.

3. Ready to use, surf and download eBooks right out of the box. Amazon pays for your wireless 3G connectivity with HSDPA speeds over its Whispernet network and you have nothing to configure.

4. Viewing orientation on either landscape or portrait is automatic when tilting the gadget accordingly. It even comes with a 5 way navigation controller which is a welcome design similar to many smartphone navigation keys.

5. With up to 3,500 eBook titles you can store on its 3 GB on board memory (4 GB total including system files), you really have to be bookworm in steroids to want for more. With the online book store making available more than 1.8 million of pre-1923 copyright free book titles and 725,000 eBook titles you can buy anywhere anytime, you have literally a worldwide library in your hands.

6. Talking about a worldwide library, the Kindle DX come preloaded with an application that allows you to access the Wikipedia site wirelessly which literally makes you a walking encyclopedia.

7. Searching specific phrases, names and topics is a breeze as the Kindle DX allows you to search through your library of eBooks and you can extend that search to the Kindle Store and the World Wide Web like any ordinary search engine.

8. Text-to-Voice is one useful feature that allows you do something else without missing a beat in your reading. It's also a neat feature when you don't know how to pronounce a word by simply putting the cursor to the word and get pronounced along with a lookup to the meaning from its New Oxford Dictionary. Even blind people can use it to "read" an eBook.

9. With a bit of subscription expense you can get your favorite newspaper or publication delivered to your Kindle DX wirelessly. You won't ever have to go looking for a broadsheet, because it's wireless, the broadsheet follows you wherever you are.

These are some of my personal favorite features, but I know that this list can differ a lot depending on how we use the reader.
