Does Mom Love to Read? Get Her a Kindle

If mom is a book lover, you should definitely consider a Kindle this year. Has she said she would never give up her printed books, would never read books on an electronic device?

Don't worry, I said the same thing! Thankfully my good friend bought me a Kindle and I absolutely love it.

Some people may not know exactly what a Kindle is although I imagine you've heard the name. Of course it's hard to believe there are people who aren't familiar with this little device but just in case, here's the scoop. A Kindle is not really a small computer that you can read books on, it is a dedicated book reader that mimics the printed page.

Sure, you can go get an iPad (for a lot more money!) and you can use it to read books, but that is not its primary function so it doesn't do it as well as the Kindle. You know what they say, jack of all trades, master of none. The other Kindle wannabes just fall short. My son actually has one of the tablet computers and it has a wicked glare which is very much unlike how a book would be.

The Kindle on the other hand has no glare and acts very much like the page of a book. That is its purpose, to act like an electronic book.

But anyway, that is not why I love my Kindle although it's a nice benefit. When I first got it I thought it was cool and all, and I even downloaded a magazine onto it, and I ordered a nice case, but then it just kind of sat around on my desk looking pretty but not being used. I just felt that I would not like it as much as a regular book I guess.

Then after a little while had passed I picked it up again and decided to go ahead and browse for books. What I found was that you can download free samples of books onto the Kindle, read the sample which is usually around 3 chapters or so, and then decide if you like the book enough to buy it.

Genius! You would not believe how much money I have wasted over the years buying books that sounded good in the store and even looked good after reading a page or two in the store, but once bought did not turn out to be good at all. I would read a few chapters and realize I did not like the plot or did not like the author's style of writing, and I would toss it aside and that money was totally wasted as it never got read.

It would end up sitting forever on a shelf of "unread books" or it might possibly be donated to the library. But either way I was out the cost of the book. If only I had back all of the money I've wasted on books I never read, I could retire today. Ah well.

But along comes Kindle which allows you to sample any book for free, and not just a few pages but a good chunk, plenty to know if you are going to like the story or not. I just love that.

But other than that I just love having all my books at my disposal and the ability to download another book any time I want to. I don't want the Kindle to be a laptop computer or an iPad, I already own a laptop and we have plenty of other gadgets. I simply love my Kindle.

Trust me, if mom is a reader at all, she will love opening this gift on Christmas Day. Just imagine that big smile when she sees the Amazon box with the Kindle inside.

Which version should you get? Well there are really 4 version, wireless, wireless with special offers, 3G, and 3G with special offers. Wireless will only be able to download books when you have Wi-Fi available, but since there are so many locations nowadays that is not normally a problem. But if it is, just pick up the 3G and you are set. The "special offers" versions have ads that only show up on the home screen when the device is "asleep," they don't interfere with reading or get in your way. So choose whichever best suits the person who will be using the new Kindle.
