Kindle 2 - What I Love and Hate About It

The Kindle 2 is the new e-book reader from Amazon. The quality of the 6" screen is pretty good and is almost identical to a real book. It does not have backlights so you won't be able to read it in the dark. The word display on the screen is pretty clear and easy on the eye. The screen also has an anti-glare surface so that you can read it easily under bright lights.

The battery life span in the Kindle 2, like its predecessor, is very impressive. With 3G and Whisper net on all the time, I was able to use it for 10 days on a single charge. The page turn button on the new model has also been improved. On the older model, the button was too large and it was quite easy to accidentally press the page turn button. In the new Kindle 2, the button has been redesigned. You would need to press the inner side (towards the screen) of the button to turn a page. This significantly reduces the number of accidental page turns.

For me, it was surprising that Amazon did not include a touch screen in this new model. About 30% of the e-book reader surface is taken up by the keyboard and controls. In reality (at least for me), I barely use the keyboard so I would much prefer a bigger screen. Nevertheless, the new keyboard looks pretty cool with its new rounded buttons and the five-way navigation control.

The Kindle Store is also another great reason for you to get the Kindle 2. The store coupled with the great connectivity allows the Kindle 2 to buy and download books, magazines and newspapers from almost anywhere in the US (download it in less than a minute). The price of the books and magazines are also much cheaper on the Kindle Store. For example, you can subscribe to your local newspaper for a month for just under $2. Many book titles that costs around $25-$35 would cost around just $10 on the Kindle store.
