A new type of portable device is dominating the electronics market and bringing attention back to literature: the e-reader. Several e-readers offer multimedia players and LCD reflective technology and countless other features. While many people find that these add-ons are important, some would rather have a low-priced e-reader that simply allows the user to read e-books. The Amazon Kindle and the Indigo Kobo are two such inexpensive and straight forward e-readers.
Both e-readers use e-Ink to display e-books. E-Ink makes the screens of e-readers resemble paper, reducing eye strain and glare. They also both have impressive battery lives, with the Kindle lasting up to ten days with WiFi and one month without, and the Kobo lasting as much as two weeks.
The Kobo's other features are a quilted back and a dictionary. These few features make the product very simple, but also detract from its usability. The Kindle has a note making tool, highlight option, dictionary, search function, and jump to page option. The experience of reading is enhanced without being complicated with these features.
Downloading e-books is slightly more simple with the Kindle because users can buy e-books directly from the device. The Kobo, however, must use USB or Bluetooth connectivity to download e-books.
The Kobo is possibly the least expensive e-reader on the market at $99 for basic and $149 with WiFi, but the product is known to run slow and have some bugs. The Kindle costs $139 and higher, but has a number of qualities that make this price seem surprisingly low.
When searching for simplicity, the Kindle is the obvious choice. The features that the product boasts neither distract nor detract from the reading experience; they enhance the experience, helping Kindle owners get the most out e-book that they download.
The Kindle has held a five-star rating and the top-selling spot on Amazon.com because it has value. Some companies over-complicate and over-price their e-readers and others leave their e-readers far too bare bones. Amazon hit the mark with Kindle, pairing simplicity with quality and producing the rightfully popular Kindle.
