The Kindle Fire from Amazon is a small-screen tablet that is much less expensive than the Apple iPad. It can be used for watching movies, playing games, listening to music, browsing the web, reading children's books, novels and magazines, and running different apps. Any content downloaded from Amazon can be stored free of cost using cloud storage space.
This version of Kindle comes with a powerful and fast dual core, 1GHz TI OMAP4 processor that runs Gingerbread, a customized version of the Android OS. It is 7.5" long, 4.7" wide, 0.45" thick and weighs just 14.6 ounces. The color touch-screen has an extra-wide viewing angle.
Priced at $199, the Kindle Fire is pretty frugal on fancy features. It has no cameras, microphones, Bluetooth, GPS or 3G wireless connectivity. It also has only a couple of GBs of internal storage space with no option to expand it. It only has a MicroUSB jack, a headphone jack and dual stereo speakers. But the low price of the Kindle Fire makes these minor issues quite insignificant.
The device is ingeniously designed to make users want to buy products from Amazon. By giving the option to use free Cloud storage for storing content purchased from Amazon, the designers seem to have made a conscious decision to entice users to buy more content from Amazon. At any given point of time, about three to four movies can be stored on the Kindle. The rest of the data can be swapped to the cloud and brought back on demand. By providing only a couple of GBs of onboard storage, Amazon also seems to discourage the storage and use other content on the device.
The Kindle Fire comes with the Silk browser for browsing the Web. The device can play files like MP3, AAC and OGG. When it comes to playing video, it supports MPEG4 and H.264 at a 1080p resolution. While the device cannot be connected to a TV or any HDMI device, it supports any Amazon-compatible set-top box like the TiVo.
The Kindle Fire provides almost 5 hours of battery time while playing back video continuously. A wide range of apps offers additional functionality to the device. The number of apps is bound to explode in the future.
The greatest plus point of the Kindle Fire is it's incredibly attractive price. With a sharp and bright hi-resolution display, the Amazon Kindle Fire is the most affordable small-screen tablet which is also very easy to use, and has the right combination of essential features to make it unbeatable in its class.
