The Kindle DX, now with global wireless, is the latest addition to the Kindle reader family. Its design was greatly shaped after the Kindle 2. The finish is white, with a bottom keyboard. There are navigation keys, and at the right, a 5 way joystick. However, it is bigger than the Kindle 2, with a 9.7" display screen, and is only 1/3" thick, which makes it comfortable to use and easy to carry.
Another nice feature of the Kindle DX is the 4GB internal memory that can store up to 3,500 eBooks, periodicals and documents. Plus you can download your books in less than 60 seconds. No PC is required. The 3G wireless allows you to download directly to your Kindle DX without any monthly charges or annual contracts. Furthermore, it now comes with global coverage. International users in over 100 countries can have access to Amazon's 275,000 plus books.
Then there's the long-awaited built-in PDF reader. You can read in either portrait or landscape without the loss of your original file's formatting. The auto-rotating screen enables you to see maps in full width, large graphs and a complete web page. Also, unlike the earlier Kindle, the DX lets you add notes and highlights. You can search for PDF files too, unless they are image based. Then this feature will not work.
The electronic paper display has also been enlarged, and with its 16 shades of gray there is more room for rich graphic content. The screen uses real ink, without a backlight, which makes reading the Kindle just like reading from paper. This technology helps to reduce eyestrain, something that is a common problem with many other electronic readers.
Another great bonus is a text to speech feature. The DX can read newspapers, magazines, books and other material out loud to you, provided that the right's holder of the document has made this feature available. Amazon also offers free book samples with the Kindle and Kindle DX. You can sample the first few chapters of a book before buying it.
You can carry and read all your personal and professional documents wherever you go. It's all stored in one handy little gadget. Plus the long battery life will give you uninterrupted reading pleasure for up to a week. That's a vast improvement over the previous battery life of 4 days.
One more point worth mentioning; if you are concerned about the environment, think of the number of trees you are saving! There is no question that any Kindles are good for the ecosystem.
So we can certainly present a good argument for the Kindle DX positives, but what about the negatives? Does it have any? Yes it does. The main complaint seems to be the price. It's very expensive. At the time of this writing, Amazon was selling it for $489.00. Another criticism is the lack of video and color. However, despite these factors, the pros of owning one definitely outweigh the cons. The Kindle's reading material is less costly than any mass marketed book or periodical. Therefore, while it might cost more upfront, there will be a huge saving in the long run.
